Pornic, in the Loire-Atlantique department, Pays de la Loire, is a former corsair town turned seaside resort, south of the Loire estuary. The town benefits from direct Atlantic Ocean access, with a coastline that alternates cliffs, coves and sandy beaches, typical of the Côte de Jade.
Camping in Pornic makes it possible to enjoy a harbour still lively with fishing and pleasure boating, overlooked by a historic castle, while staying close to several family-friendly beaches. The town is part of the Côte de Jade, a stretch of the Vendée and Saint-Nazaire coast valued for staying more unspoilt than some of the larger neighbouring seaside resorts.
Pornic's castle, which has overlooked the harbour since the Middle Ages, links its history to that of Gilles de Rais, a notorious figure said to have inspired some elements of the Bluebeard tale. The harbour itself, with its fishing boats and colourful houses, remains the town's beating heart.
The Pornic corniche, a coastal path running along the town to neighbouring towns, makes it possible to discover coves and viewpoints over the ocean, notably towards Sainte-Marie and Gourmalon. Not far away, Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef extends this coastline of low cliffs and beaches that characterises the whole area, between the Loire estuary and the Vendée.
