Tharon-Plage is part of the town of Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef, in the Loire-Atlantique department, on the Côte de Jade, the stretch of Atlantic coast between the Loire estuary and Pornic. The campsites listed here all benefit from a seaside setting, on a coastline known for alternating sandy beaches and small rocky cliffs.
The resort developed in the late nineteenth century around its long beach and its corniche, a path that runs along the coast and serves several more intimate coves. This varied terrain sets Tharon-Plage apart from the straighter beaches of southern Vendée, with open views over the ocean from several rocky headlands.
People camp here for being right next to the sea and for the family-friendly seaside resort atmosphere, halfway between the bustle of La Baule and the calmer, more rural Côte de Retz, in an area still popular for the quality of its bathing waters.
Tharon-Plage draws its identity from its corniche, a path that runs along the rocky coastline and links several beaches and coves, offering views over the ocean and the rock formations that dot the coast here. The casino, built in the early twentieth century overlooking the main beach, recalls the resort's long seaside history.
The town of Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef, of which Tharon-Plage is part, also keeps a more rural character inland, between marshland and farmland, a stark contrast with the summer buzz of the seafront. The harbour of Comblessac and the neighbouring small coves round out the picture for lovers of shore fishing or quieter swimming.
Nearby, Pornic brings its marina, castle and market, while the Loire estuary, with Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Brevin, remains reachable for anyone wanting to experience different atmospheres along the Côte de Jade.
