South Corsica has 55 listed campsites, very widely dominated by the coast with 50 establishments installed on the coastline, against a handful on river banks. Camping here is first and foremost a matter of beaches and coves, along a coast that alternates widely open gulfs and more intimate inlets, between Ajaccio and the far south of the island, towards Bonifacio.
The few river-bank addresses nonetheless allow reaching the mountainous interior of the department, between enclosed valleys and watercourses cascading towards the sea, for a stay in cooler conditions during high season, away from crowds of the coast's best-known beaches.
South Corsica remains first and foremost a seaside destination, supported by the reputation of its beaches and turquoise waters, without entirely neglecting the river hinterland for those seeking calm and mid-mountain hiking, a contrast appreciated by visitors in mid-summer.
The Gulf of Porto, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its Piana inlets, count among the most spectacular natural sites of South Corsica, with their pink granite cliffs plunging into the sea. Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, and Bonifacio, perched on its limestone cliffs facing Sardinia, are two essential stops for any stay in the department.
The Sanguinaire islands, at the entrance of Ajaccio gulf, offer a spectacular setting at sunset, while the mountainous interior of the department, around valleys such as Taravo or Prunelli, allows discovering a wilder Corsica, far from seaside summer bustle.
Between fine sand beaches, coves accessible on foot and hilltop villages typical of the Corsican maquis, South Corsica combines reputed coastline and preserved Mediterranean hinterland, for stays as much seaside-focused as mountain hiking. The south island's coves, often accessible only on foot, remain among the most preserved in the Mediterranean.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
