Ajaccio is the capital of Corse-du-Sud, on the shores of the gulf of the same name, on the island's west coast. The 3 campsites listed here mostly enjoy this seaside setting, with one establishment also located on a riverbank, which brings a bit of variety to the area.
People come to Ajaccio for its waters, the marked blue of the gulf and, more discreetly, those of the Gravona river which flows into the sea nearby. The campsite benefits from a pronounced Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers typical of Corsica, and a mountainous backdrop that drops straight into the sea.
Between the gulf's beaches and the mountainous hinterland, the town remains a practical base for exploring the island's west coast, with the added benefit of genuine city life right by the campsites. The gulf's beaches, reachable in a few minutes from the centre, make it easy to switch between a day at the beach and a stroll around town.
Ajaccio is above all the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Maison Bonaparte, where he was born in 1769, can be visited right in the historic centre. Place d'Austerlitz, dominated by his statue, is a reminder of this figure's lasting imprint on the city's identity.
The gulf of Ajaccio opens onto the Sanguinaires islands, a small rocky archipelago visible from the Pointe de la Parata, especially photogenic at sunset. The citadel, still occupied by the army, closes off the bay on the old town side and makes for a pleasant walk.
The town still has a lively covered market selling Corsican charcuterie and cheeses, a good introduction to the island's produce before heading off into the nearby mountains. The Gravona, which crosses the plain before joining the gulf, rounds out this landscape where sea and relief meet within just a few kilometres. The streets of the historic centre, with their colourful façades and lively terraces, keep a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere all year round.

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
