Saint-Jean-de-la-Rivière, in the Manche department, in Normandy, is a small town on the west coast of the Cotentin. The two campsites listed here are set by the sea, benefiting from the wild coastline that lines this area, between dunes and small cliffs.
The village, despite its name evoking a river, sits directly on the Cotentin's coastal frontage, close to Barneville-Carteret. Camping here means choosing a coastline less crowded than the larger Normandy resorts, with easy access to the sea and unspoilt dune landscapes.
The town also benefits from being close to the Cap de Carteret and its harbour, which remains a practical base for exploring this part of the Normandy coast, between beaches and coastal paths.
Saint-Jean-de-la-Rivière lies very close to the Cap de Carteret, whose lighthouse and cliffs offer one of the finest panoramas on the west coast of the Cotentin, with views over the Channel Islands on clear days. The Sentier des Douaniers, which runs along the coast, makes it easy to reach this viewpoint on foot from the surrounding area.
The nearby harbour of Carteret keeps the atmosphere of a family seaside resort, between fishing and pleasure boats, with regular crossings to the island of Jersey. The dunes that line the coast are home to distinctive plant life, protected for its fragility.
On this still fairly low-key stretch of Normandy coast, the focus is on walks between the beach and the countryside, far from the bustle of the Cotentin's better-known resorts.
