Calvados has 51 campsites, very widely dominated by the coast: 42 establishments open directly onto the Channel, against only 4 on river banks, 4 on pond banks and 4 on lake banks. It is one of this guide's most coastal departments.
The Flowery Coast, around Deauville and Trouville, and the Mother-of-Pearl Coast, further west towards D-Day beaches, concentrate most of this seaside offering. The few campsites on river, pond or lake banks offer a more intimate alternative, particularly inland and towards Norman Switzerland.
Calvados is primarily aimed at campers seeking the coast, with marginal but real choice for those preferring inland.
Calvados is inseparable from D-Day beaches of June 1944, between Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah Beach, dotted with museums and memorials. Bayeux, nearby, retains its famous eleventh-century embroidered tapestry, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On the Flowery Coast, Deauville and Trouville display their seaside villas and wooden boardwalks, heritage of the Belle Époque. Honfleur, with its old basin and timber-framed houses, remains one of Normandy's most photographed port towns.
Inland, Norman Switzerland offers more marked relief, appreciated for hiking and canoeing on the Orne.
