A double-faced department: a coastal strip on the Opal Coast, around Dunkerque, and an interior rich in ponds, particularly in rural Avesnois.

Further south, Avesnois, a bocage region dotted with ponds and rivers, contrasts with the flat and urban landscapes of the rest of the department, offering a greener and more rural setting conducive to hiking between meadows, forests and typical bocage villages. The Parc naturel régional de l'Avesnois protects this rural landscape and its cheese-making know-how, particularly around Maroilles, the region's emblematic cheese, and its traditional orchards.
