the guide

Everything about the campsites by the water in Dunkerque

Dunkirk, in the Nord department, in Hauts-de-France, is a major seaport facing the North Sea, marked by its role in the Allied evacuation of 1940. Twenty-five camping establishments are listed in the town, very largely by the sea, but also around lakes and ponds that dot this plain reclaimed from the water.

People camp here for the large beach at Malo-les-Bains, a long stretch of urban sand, while also enjoying a hinterland of wetlands ideal for fishing and quiet walks. Dunkirk thus combines a North Sea seaside with industrial and port heritage, and freshwater natural spaces just minutes from the coast.

It's an area that allows for a varied stay, between a lively large beach and the more low-key ponds of the Dunkirk hinterland. Dunkirk thus lends itself to an urban, active stay, unlike the more rural resorts on the Hauts-de-France coast.

What to see and do in Dunkerque

Malo-les-Bains beach, with its sea wall lined with early-twentieth-century seaside villas, remains the heart of Dunkirk's coastal life. The Saint-Éloi belfry, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the belfries of Belgium and France, overlooks the town and offers a panorama over the harbour and the North Sea.

Dunkirk is also known for its carnival, one of the oldest and most popular in France, and for its role in the 1940 Operation Dynamo, retraced at the Mémorial du Souvenir. Around the town, the coastal ponds and wetlands, a legacy of the old drained marshes, offer a calmer, more natural counterpoint to the bustle of the port.

Dunkirk's harbour museum, set up in a former tobacco warehouse, rounds out the discovery of the town's maritime and industrial history. The FRAC Grand Large, set up on former shipyards, also illustrates the recent cultural conversion of the port areas.

our method

How we select every campsite

1

A verified criterion, not a promise

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.

2

Reputation, backed by reviews

We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.

3

Direct booking, transparent pricing

You book directly with the campsite, no middleman or hidden markup. The price shown is the price you pay.
