Somme brings together 57 campsites, of which 30 are by the sea, 16 on pond banks and 13 on river banks. The Somme Bay, one of the vastest estuaries of the Channel coast, structures a good part of this coastal offering, between Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.
Pond-bank campsites benefit from the department's numerous bodies of water, particularly in the Somme valley, where former peat bogs today form ponds conducive to fishing and bird observation. The calmer Somme river hosts river-bank campsites, appreciated for walks on foot or by bike along the water.
Somme thus combines a real coast and a hinterland of wet areas, without either taking completely over the other.
Somme Bay counts among France's most recognised natural sites, classified for its estuary's richness. Marquenterre park, at its edge, allows observing numerous migratory bird species in any season.
Amiens, the department's prefecture, is organised around its Gothic cathedral, France's vastest, and its hortillonnages quarter, these floating gardens crossed by boat. Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, a medieval town on the estuary, completes the coastal visit.
Somme also retains strong World War I memory, with several circuits and memorial places dedicated to battles that took place there.
