Le Crotoy, in the Somme department, is the only village in the Baie de Somme facing due south, a distinctive feature that gives it light and sunshine renowned throughout the bay. The three campsites listed are linked to the sea, complemented by one establishment benefiting from a pond-type body of water, in keeping with the marshland landscape that lines the back of the Picardy coast, in Hauts-de-France.
Camping in Le Crotoy means choosing the atmosphere of a small fishing harbour rather than a large seaside resort: a sandy beach exposed to the tides, activities linked to observing the bay's wildlife, and a more intimate pace than on the Côte d'Opale further north.
Le Crotoy is known for watching the common and grey seals that rest on the sandbanks of the Baie de Somme, one of the largest wild seal populations in mainland France. The nearby Marquenterre bird park protects dozens of species of migratory birds on a listed site.
The Baie de Somme's small steam train links Le Crotoy to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme alongside the mudflats, a heritage outing popular with families. The village itself, with its colourful fishing harbour and steep lanes, keeps the charm of a Belle Époque seaside resort, far from the bustle of the coast's larger resorts.
