Upper Corsica has 54 listed campsites, with clear dominance of sea bank (45 establishments), followed by river bank (10), then, more marginally, lake bank (2) and pond bank (1). The coastline, from Cape Corsica to the Agriates desert, structures most of the offering, without excluding a river hinterland well represented compared to other coastal departments in this lot.
This share of riverside campsites, more significant than in South Corsica, is explained by the department's rugged relief and by the presence of interior valleys, around Corte particularly, where watercourses descend from mountains to the Mediterranean forming spectacular enclosed gorges.
Upper Corsica thus offers a dual face: a coast prized for its beaches, and a mountainous interior crossed by rivers, for a stay that can alternate sea and nature depending on chosen location, between lively summer coast and Upper Corsica still preserved from mass tourism.
Cape Corsica, a fine mountainous peninsula to the north of the island, strings together its fishing villages and Genoese towers facing the sea, on a coastal road much sought after by panorama lovers and switchback fans. The Agriates desert, a vast preserved natural space, is home to Saleccia beach, accessible on foot or by boat, renowned for its white sand and turquoise waters.
Bastia, the department's main town, retains a lively old harbour and a citadel dominating the sea from the heights. Inland, Corte, former historic capital of Corsica, nestles in the heart of mountains, between the Golo and Tavignano, two emblematic department rivers that carve deep gorges frequented by hikers.
