Ghisonaccia, in Haute-Corse, on Corsica, sits on the island's eastern plain, a vast area long marshy before being drained in the twentieth century. Three camping establishments are listed in the town, benefiting from access to the Tyrrhenian Sea along a coastline still less built-up than other parts of the island.
People camp here for long sandy beaches, lined with pine and eucalyptus trees planted when the plain was drained, in a setting wilder than southern Corsica. Ghisonaccia draws in lovers of a quiet seaside, close to the Corsican mountains that close the horizon inland.
It's a destination that appeals to those seeking a more low-key Corsica, between unspoilt beaches and a mountainous hinterland. Ghisonaccia particularly suits those wanting to avoid the heavy summer crowds of the island's major southern tourist hubs, in a setting that stays close to nature.
The eastern plain around Ghisonaccia, long unhealthy because of malaria, was drained in the mid-twentieth century, thanks in particular to the large-scale planting of eucalyptus trees, whose rows now characterise the local landscape. The sandy beaches lining the town, such as Vignale, remain less crowded than those of southern Corsica.
Ghisonaccia's coastline opens onto the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the first foothills of inland Corsica in the background, offering a striking contrast between coastal plain and mountains. The ponds and lagoons that dot the eastern Corsican coast, a little further north and south of the town, make it a rich area for watching migratory birds.
The mountain ranges overlooking the plain to the west finally offer hiking possibilities for anyone wanting to extend the stay beyond the coast alone. The road heading inland crosses hilltop villages typical of deep Corsica, just a few dozen minutes from the coast.
