Loir-et-Cher has 17 listed campsites, with dominance of river bank (8 establishments), followed by lake bank (5) then pond bank (3). This Touraine and Sologne department owes this diversity to the passage of the Loire, Loir, Cher and Sauldre, but also to the presence of numerous bodies of water, particularly in Sologne, a vast territory of forests and ponds.
The campsite offering thus reflects a territory where one can camp on the bank of a major river as well as near a typical Sologne forest pond, or a wider lake in the north of the department, each geographic sector offering a different atmosphere and specific relationship with water.
A balance between Loire valley and Sologne hinterland that makes Loir-et-Cher a sufficiently diverse destination for wateside camping, never opening onto the sea, and suitable as much for heritage lovers as for nature and tranquility enthusiasts.
Chambord castle, the largest Loire castle with its double-spiral staircase attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and its immense forested estate walled in, is found in the heart of Loir-et-Cher, at the edge of Sologne. Blois, the department's prefecture, also possesses its own royal castle, overlooking the Loire, blending several architectural styles.
Sologne, a vast territory of forests, ponds and heaths, spreads over much of the department and lends itself to hiking, wildlife observation and discovery of rural heritage marked by brick and wood, inherited from great hunting estates.
The Loire valley, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site on this stretch, completes the visit with its riverside villages, troglodytic caves and cycling routes connecting the department's main castles. Cheverny, another emblematic castle near Blois, completes this exceptional heritage ensemble.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
