Loiret offers 15 listed campsites, very largely installed on river banks (10 establishments), ahead of lake banks (2) and pond banks (1). The Loire, which crosses the department from east to west, explains this fluvial dominance, as does the Loiret, a small resurgent river giving its name to the department and flowing for only a few kilometres.
The territory's north, more urban around Orléans, and south, at the gates of Sologne, offer different atmospheres but are both structured by the presence of moving water rather than large lakes or vast pond networks like in neighbouring Cher or Loir-et-Cher departments.
Camping in Loiret is first and foremost enjoying the banks of the Loire or its tributaries, in a department acting as a hinge between Île-de-France and Loire Valley, both accessible from Paris and already fully rural once past the prefecture.
Orléans, Loiret's prefecture, retains rich heritage linked to Joan of Arc and its history as a Loire city, with its Cathedral of Sainte-Croix and historic centre on the Loire bank, which hosts each year a major commemorative festival in May.
To the south of the department, Sologne extends its forests and ponds, while the Loiret, a short resurgent river famous for its sources with crystal-clear waters, crosses Olivet in a green setting appreciated for punt rides and shaded walks.
Loire by Bike crosses the department for several dozens of kilometres, connecting villages of character and viewpoints over the river, one of the last great wild rivers in Europe still preserved from heavy development, where sand banks and natural islets are visible. These river landscapes, still largely preserved, count among the best conserved and wildest of the entire Loire Valley.
