The Camargue, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), refers to the vast Rhône delta between its two main branches. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the most iconic village in the Camargue, hosts a major Romani pilgrimage every year and still has a fortified church typical of Mediterranean coastal religious architecture.
The salt pans and marshes that line the coast form a flat, ever-changing landscape, where paths, dykes and cycle tracks allow visitors to observe distinctive wildlife and plant life, between reed beds, salt-tolerant scrubland and long, empty sandy beaches.
