The Périgord noir, in the south-east of the Dordogne department, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, draws its identity from the Dordogne valley, the river that winds between limestone cliffs and hilltop villages. Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming majority of campsites in the area are on the riverbank, complemented by a few addresses by ponds and more low-key bodies of water.
Camping in the Périgord noir means above all enjoying the river: swimming, canoeing and walks along the banks set the rhythm of the stay, in a setting of oak forests that give the region its name. This exceptional concentration of campsites along the Dordogne makes it one of the best-known river camping destinations in south-west France, far from any coastline.
The Périgord noir is inseparable from the town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, whose ochre-stone medieval centre remains one of the best preserved in France, and from the decorated caves of the Vézère valley, starting with Lascaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its prehistoric paintings.
The Dordogne river itself is lined with castles facing each other across the banks, notably Beynac and Castelnaud, long rivals during the Hundred Years' War and today among the most visited sites in the region. Canoeing down the Dordogne, between cliffs and villages such as La Roque-Gageac built into the rock face, remains the valley's signature activity, accessible to most skill levels.

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
