Ain is home to 23 wateside campsites, with fairly balanced distribution between river and lake. Eleven establishments line a river, mainly the Ain itself or the Saône, while nine benefit from a body of water or lake, particularly in the Bugey and Revermont regions.
Lakes are less numerous, with three campsites, but reflect the proximity to the Dombes, a vast territory south of the department known for its thousands of ponds dedicated to fish farming. This diversity makes Ain a department where you choose your campsite based on the atmosphere you seek: the refreshing gorges of the Ain for canoeing and river swimming, or the calm of a body of water at the foot of the Jura for fishing and light sailing.
Between Lyon, Geneva and the Jura massif, the department benefits from a central location that attracts families on short breaks and enthusiasts of whitewater sports alike.
Ain is organised around several distinct natural areas. To the south, the Dombes and its ponds are home to rich aquatic wildlife, particularly migratory birds observable at the Villars-les-Dombes bird park. To the northeast, the Jura massif and Bugey offer gorges carved by the Ain river, appreciated for canoeing-kayaking and swimming in moving water.
The department also retains remarkable architectural heritage, with the medieval town of Pérouges, one of France's most beautiful villages, and the royal monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse. Local cuisine, marked by Bresse poultry and pond fish, completes the visit.
Close to Lyon and the Jura massif, Ain makes it easy to combine hiking, water activities and discovery of Bresse heritage.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
