Annecy lies in Haute-Savoie, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, on the shores of the lake of the same name, one of the largest natural lakes in France. Of the 19 campsites listed, 18 enjoy direct access to the lake, and one sits on a riverbank, confirming a clearly lakeside rather than river identity.
People come to camp in Annecy for the quality of the lake's water, regularly ranked among the cleanest in Europe, and for the mountain setting that surrounds it. The shores offer swimming, developed beaches and water sports, set against the backdrop of the Bornes and Bauges mountain ranges.
Between the lake and an old town crossed by canals, Annecy remains a particularly complete camping destination in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, where freshwater swimming goes hand in hand with an urban heritage that's rather rare for a town this size. Almost all the campsites in the area enjoy direct access to the lake, a rare asset for a town so close to the major Alpine ski resorts.
Annecy owes its nickname "Venice of the Alps" to its old town, crossed by the Thiou canal and lined with colourful houses and flower-decked bridges. The Palais de l'Isle, a former prison built on an island in the middle of the canal, remains one of the town's most photographed landmarks.
Lake Annecy, formed by glaciers, stretches at the foot of the Tournette and Bauges mountain ranges, offering a mountainous setting that runs straight down to the shore. A path runs almost the entire way around the lake, very popular with both cyclists and walkers.
Annecy Castle, once home to the Counts of Geneva, overlooks the old town and today houses a museum dedicated to local history and the Alps. Between clear water, mountains and a well-preserved historic centre, Annecy brings together several kinds of visit within a small area, a real plus for family stays. The old town's markets, well known throughout the region, round out a visit with their typical Savoyard produce.
