Drôme lists 57 wateside campsites, very largely on riverbanks: 55 establishments are installed along a watercourse, against only three near a lake. The Drôme river, which gives the department its name, as well as the Rhône which borders its western limit, explain this strong dominance.
Many campsites extend along the Drôme itself, renowned for its clear waters and pebble beaches, particularly in the south of the department towards Die and Diois. Others benefit from smaller rivers like the Roubion or Berre, in a Provençal atmosphere marked by lavender fields and olive groves.
With 57 campsites, Drôme is one of the best-stocked destinations for riverside camping, between Alps and Provence, and attracts clientele drawn to both moving water swimming and Provençal living.
Drôme combines Alpine and Provençal influences. The Vercors, to the northeast, offers spectacular cliffs and gorges, while the south of the department, around Nyons, takes on Mediterranean character with its age-old olive groves and lavender fields.
The Drôme river, which crosses the department from east to west, is appreciated for its swimming in moving water and natural pebble beaches. Diois, the region around Die, is also renowned for its Clairette, a local sparkling wine.
Architectural heritage is no less impressive, with the hilltop village of Mirmande, classified among France's most beautiful villages, and La Garde-Adhémar, renowned for its viewpoint over the Rhône valley. This diversity of landscapes makes Drôme an appreciated destination for hiking and cycling.
