Val-de-Marne has only one listed wateside campsite, installed on river bank. This inner-crown Paris department, densely urbanised, is crossed by Marne, giving it its name, as well as Seine on its west fringe, but logically offers little place for outdoor accommodation.

Marne banks, in this department, nonetheless have history linked to early-twentieth-century Paris popular leisure, with their cafés and boat outings, a tradition partially persisting today along remodeled banks and towing paths.

For a more well-stocked camping stay wateside near Paris, Seine-et-Marne or Essonne departments, less urbanised, offer wider palette of establishments installed on river, pond or lake banks, in greener setting. Val-de-Marne nonetheless remains well-served by public transit, making it a practical base for exploring these neighbouring departments.

What to see and do in Val-de-Marne

Val-de-Marne is home to Vincennes Wood at its Paris border, with its Daumesnil lake and Vincennes Zoo, as well as Vincennes town and its medieval fortress castle, former royal residence with a keep among Europe's highest, today open for visits.

Marne banks, between Joinville-le-Pont, Nogent-sur-Marne and Champigny-sur-Marne, retain café atmosphere that made this sector famous in the early twentieth century, with waterside restaurants, water activities and popular dances still organised certain summer weekends.

Rungis international market, the world's largest fresh produce market, is also found in the department, as are Marne islands, small nature refuges in peri-urban area, appreciated for fishing and water-side walking.
