A 5-star campsite with valley views in the Ardèche
Camping Le Merle Roux is located at 1660 chemin du Roux in Baix, in the Ardèche department. Its setting is exceptional: a hillside estate offering a breathtaking view over the Rhône valley and the landscapes characteristic of the Vivarais. The sloping terrain is one of the campsite’s features worth noting: it’s perfectly suited to families with teenagers and older children, but less recommended for young children or people with reduced mobility. This topography, however, allows holidaymakers to enjoy exceptional panoramas right from their pitch. The 5-star estate spreads over a carefully landscaped park, with shaded pitches arranged in successive terraces. Accommodation ranges from contemporary mobile homes to more spacious versions for large families. Access to the Eyrieux river, below the estate, rounds out the natural setting. Open from 3 April to 13 September 2026, the establishment holds a rating of 9.0/10 from nearly 2,000 customer surveys, a mark of its recognised quality of welcome.
Restaurant with a shaded terrace and warm Ardèche hospitality
Dining on site includes both an à la carte restaurant and a snack bar, both open throughout the campsite’s season, from 3 April to 13 September 2026. The restaurant showcases Ardèche flavours — caillette (pork and chard pâté), local charcuterie, grilled dishes, market salads and regional specialities — in a friendly atmosphere with a particularly popular shaded terrace. Having an aperitif on the terrace facing the valley panorama is one of the pleasures regulars often mention. The snack bar, quicker to grab a bite, offers pizzas, platters and ice cream for tasty breaks after swimming. As for entertainment, the Capfun team runs peak season with its Clapou clubs for 4-6 year-olds, Politicator for 7-10 year-olds, Nobodys for teenagers, as well as pool wake-up sessions, sports tournaments and themed evenings. The whole Merle Roux team looks after holidaymakers throughout their stay. Practical services include a small grocery shop, bread delivery, a laundrette, Wi-Fi and bike hire.
The Eyrieux, the Gorges de l’Ardèche and hilltop villages
Merle Roux’s location makes it a prime base for discovering the richness of the Ardèche. The Eyrieux river, accessible from the campsite, offers swimming in natural pools, fishing and canoe-kayak trips. The famous Dolce Via, a former railway line converted into a cycle path, crosses the valley a short distance away and offers miles of shaded riverside walks. The Gorges de l’Ardèche, 45 minutes to the south, are an absolute must: a two-day canoe descent, spectacular panoramas from the viewpoint and the famous Pont d’Arc are all well worth the trip. The Grotte Chauvet 2, a reconstruction of the prehistoric cave art, is right next to the Gorges. Closer by, Privas, the capital of the Ardèche, is 15 minutes away for shopping or a meal. The hilltop villages of the Vivarais — Chalencon, Désaignes, Saint-Agrève — are worth the effort for heritage lovers. The Château de Crussol, with its exceptional view over the valley, is 30 minutes away. On site at the campsite, a multi-sports pitch, pétanque and table tennis tables keep sports fans busy.
