Lake Paladru, in the Isère department, is a glacial lake known for the purity of its water, one of the factors that long limited motor boating on its shores in order to protect the resource. The three campsites listed here are logically all positioned around the lake, far from any coastline: this is Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, between the foothills of the Chartreuse and the hills of Bas-Dauphiné.
Camping by Lake Paladru means choosing a freshwater, nature-focused stay rather than a seaside resort: supervised swimming, developed beaches, calm water activities such as canoeing or light sailing, and a village setting around the towns of Charavines, Paladru and Montferrat. The pace here is deliberately more relaxed than at the larger Alpine lakes nearby.
Lake Paladru hides beneath its waters one of the most studied lakeside archaeological sites in France: the remains of an eleventh-century medieval village, submerged at the bottom of the lake, have been explored through underwater excavations that became well known in the scientific community. The site of Colletière, in the town of Charavines, is the historic starting point.
Around the lake, the villages of Paladru, Charavines and Montferrat keep a rural atmosphere typical of Bas-Dauphiné, with hiking trails that make it possible to walk all the way around the lake. The closeness of the Chartreuse massif to the east, and the first foothills of the Vercors, offer mid-mountain walking possibilities to round out a stay centred on fresh water and quiet.
