Vallon-Pont-d'Arc lies in the Ardèche department, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, at the entrance to the Ardèche gorges, one of the best-known natural sites in the south of France. The very many campsites listed here all benefit from a riverside setting: it's around the Ardèche and its course that the town's tourist reputation was built.
The river, with its fast-flowing water and pebble beaches, shapes Vallon-Pont-d'Arc's identity far more than the road or the village itself. Over the decades, the area has become one of France's capitals of canoeing and kayaking, thanks to a well-known descent route that crosses the gorges over several kilometres.
With a particularly high number of campsites for a town of this size, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc concentrates a significant share of the outdoor accommodation offering in the Ardèche gorges area, a sign of the destination's lasting appeal for holidays deep in nature.
Vallon-Pont-d'Arc owes its name to the Pont d'Arc, a natural limestone arch dozens of metres tall, sculpted by the erosion of the Ardèche river over thousands of years. This site, one of the most photographed in the region, marks the entrance to the Ardèche gorges and remains an almost obligatory passage for anyone paddling down the river by canoe.
The gorges themselves stretch for about thirty kilometres to Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, offering cliffs, caves and spectacular meanders, a route that can be covered in a day by canoe or kayak, suited to paddlers of all levels. The Grotte Chauvet 2, a replica of the decorated cave discovered in 1994 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, can be visited a few kilometres from the village.
The village of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, with its shopping streets geared towards outdoor tourism, rounds out this offering with a lively summer atmosphere, between canoe rentals, Provençal markets and hikes on the heights overlooking the gorges.

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
