Les Vans, in the Ardèche department, is a town in the south of the department, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, at the gateway to the Cévennes. The fifteen campsites listed are all linked to a river, a very different profile from the coastal towns in this batch: here, it's the Chassezac and the Ardèche that shape the camping landscape rather than the sea.
Camping in Les Vans means choosing a river stay deep in nature, between swimming in fast-flowing water, canoeing-kayaking and hiking through garrigue scrubland and limestone cliffs. The town benefits from an already southern climate, on the borders of the Ardèche and the Lozère, far from any coastline.
The Bois de Païolive, right next to Les Vans, is a spectacular jumble of limestone boulders sculpted by erosion, crossed by paths that wind between the rocks and a holm oak forest, one of the most visited natural sites in southern Ardèche. The Chassezac, which runs alongside this rock chaos, is known for its clear waters and wild swimming spots.
The Ardèche gorges, further north, remain reachable within about half an hour and concentrate most of the region's canoeing activities. The old village of Les Vans, with its medieval lanes and market, rounds out this stay centred on nature and the rivers of the Cévennes.
