Ardèche Sud covers a wide area of the Ardèche department, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, built almost entirely around the Ardèche river. Of the 79 campsites listed, 78 are located on the riverbank and just one on a lakeshore, making this by far the most water-oriented freshwater area on the portal.
People come to the south of Ardèche for the river itself, its fast-flowing waters, natural pools and canoe trips that have become an institution of summer holidays in France. The campsite here enjoys a setting of limestone gorges that is rather spectacular, very different from seaside landscapes.
Between cliffs, caves and meanders carved out by the water over thousands of years, this area remains one of the most densely camping-packed river destinations in the country, with a particularly wide choice on the portal. Families looking for freshwater swimming and long canoe trips will find one of the most complete grounds in France here.
The best-known site in the area remains the Pont d'Arc, a natural arch carved by the Ardèche river, the classic starting point for the canoe trip down into the gorges. These gorges, cut into limestone, stretch for about thirty kilometres between spectacular cliffs and meanders.
The Chauvet cave, discovered in 1994 and known for its cave paintings among the oldest in the world, can today be visited through its replica, the Caverne du Pont-d'Arc, built near the original site, which remains closed to the public to preserve it.
The area has several characterful villages built from limestone, typical of southern Ardèche, where activity remains largely tied to river tourism and local winegrowing. Hiking, caving and canoeing form the most popular trio of activities here, in a landscape that contrasts sharply with the nearby Rhône valley. Several viewpoints set up along the gorges allow visitors to admire the scenery without necessarily paddling the river by canoe.
